THAMES & NEWCASTLE BEGINS GEORGIAN TOWNHOUSE RENOVATION

GEORGIAN TOWNHOUSE RENOVATION

Thames & Newcastle has commenced the renovation of a listed Georgian townhouse in Islington, London.

The six-month project will see the team reconfigure the ground floor to create self-contained living space and construct a timber-framed extension with full-height glazing. The slate roof will be replaced and the interior fully refurbished, including a new kitchen and master bathroom.

A key focus of the project is thermal performance and comfort. Thames & Newcastle is lowering the ground floor slab and installing aerogel insulation – an ultra-thin material that maximises energy efficiency without compromising space or altering the building’s fabric. Throughout the property, the original sash windows will be refurbished with a Ventrolla draught proofing system, preserving their period character.

Additional upgrades include a Newton tanking system in the basement, installed by the contractor’s in-house waterproofing specialists. The front pavement vaults will also be waterproofed, enabling the space to be repurposed as a utility room.

As the townhouse has direct street access only, deliveries, waste removal and temporary storage will be carefully managed to minimise disruption to neighbours.

Stanley Leask, Commercial Director at Thames & Newcastle, said: “After more than 20 years in this impressive home, the owners want to modernise and maximise their space, so it’s ready for their next chapter. Our work will futureproof the property, creating a more liveable, energy-efficient home without compromising its Georgian character.”

Work is expected to complete by the end of October 2026.
